Making Better Decisions In 3 Steps

Whether you like it or not, our lives are full of decisions to make: daily decisions, small decisions, life-altering decisions, personal decisions, business decisions, & relationship decisions.

We need to get good at and become confident when making decisions.

If I’m being completely honest decision-making is something I’ve really had to grow in.

I’m a first child. I’m a perfectionist and I do not like making mistakes, which made me terrified to make the wrong decision.

But the fear of making bad decisions can be just as crippling as making bad decisions.

Proverbs 3:5-8 | “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.  Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.”

This is an assurance to us that we don’t have to figure it all out on our own but God will help direct our path. Here are some steps to start in your decision-making process:

Ask God for wisdom.

Don’t go through a trial not asking God for wisdom. You need it. Don’t say, “I can handle it. I have resources in the natural world that can solve this problem.”

‭James‬ ‭1:5 | “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

I think with hearing God we often make it seem like it’s this hard thing but it doesn’t have to be. So how do we hear God?

Go to His Word.

Joshua 1:8 | “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

The Bible is the primary source to hear God and discern when He’s speaking.

Many of us want to hear God’s spoken word, but we don’t realize that we need to open the Bible. God speaks from His Word and from the preaching of His Word.

It’s good for us to read the Bible daily, even when we don’t feel like. When we open the Word, God speaks.

The truth is… a lot of times we go to God with stuff that He’s already given you an answer in His Word.

In Hebrews it says that the Word of God is like a sword it helps us cut through our soul and spirit and determine what is our soul – our mind, our will and emotions and what really is our spirit God in us.

God is never going to lead you down a path that is contrary to His Word!!!

Be Led By God’s Peace.

Colossians 3:15 |Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts [deciding and settling questions that arise]….”

This is one of the best things my parents taught me: to be lead by peace. Does it feel right or does something just feel wrong?

God doesn’t lead by fear. So if it’s God, you shouldn’t be having feelings of it being wrong.

One of the best ways to tell if it’s God or not is to…

Look at the fruit in the matter.

What does this decision produce in my life? Love, Joy, Patience, Peace, Self – Control.

Proverbs 11:14 | “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
Proverbs 19:20 | “Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.”

Are you willing to listen? Are you seeking wisdom from others? A lot of times if we aren’t careful we are just seeking/talking to people who we know will agree.

Many times, we want God to speak directly to us, but He wants us to humble ourselves and be open to hear from our church leaders and counselors.

God uses people—leaders in your church—to help you, lead you, and teach you.

When you’re going through a difficult season, consult godly counsel.

Go to someone who’s going to speak the truth in love. Go to someone who cares about your future, not just your relationship with them.

Every morning my daughter wakes up asking for fruit snacks. If the decision were up to her, she would probably eat two packs before breakfast. Part of me wants to make her happy and give in, but in love, I choose to give her a healthy breakfast because I care about her well being.

Who are you talking to? I don’t think you should ever make a big decision without Godly counsel.

Real friends give godly counsel or direct their friends to counsel.

If you have someone in your life that you are afraid of telling them the truth the least you can do is tell them “I don’t think you should make this decision without talking to a pastor or leader in your life” or “I’ll go with you to talk to them if you don’t want to go alone.”

We aren’t meant to live passive lives.

Don’t just do nothing.

Even if you have made the decision to wait, waiting is meant to be something we do with action. We passionately wait.

If you are asking, “How do I passionately wait??”

Be obedient to what you know to do.

I’ve found that when I need an answer from God on something I often find it when I’m being obedient in other areas of my life.

Being obedient to be at church, be at a small group thing, minister to someone, or hang out with someone.

I remember when I was praying and believing for a husband to come along I was 27 still single and everyone felt very sorry for me.

I was praying to God all the time about what to do to get a husband. At this point I was honestly trying to decide if I needed to move somewhere else or try online dating?

During this time in my life, my pastor asked me to lead a young adult small group. Even though I wanted to focus on dating and myself, I started a group. Little did I know that through this act of obedience, I would meet my future husband, Chandler.

One act of obedience could lead to the right decision, answered prayer, or the right path.

What is God asking you to be obedient right now? You never know what’s on the other side of your obedience and your consistency.

It’s easy to get caught up stressing about the decision you need to make that we forget God is asking you to be obedient in other areas of your life. It may seem that the decisions don’t even relate but who knows what’s on the other side?!

Start today by being obedient… maybe you’ve been making a decision you know isn’t what God wants. You can decide today to make things right. God is still with you.

If you’re in this place… you have a big decision ahead of you and you’re not sure what to do, take a minute and go to God. Ask God to give you wisdom!
